Pre-War Apartment Renovation on Manhattan’s Upper East Side

Pre-War Apartment Renovation on Manhattan’s Upper East Side
After living in this pre-war gem of an apartment in a historic building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for nearly 30 years, our empty-nester clients wanted a fresh aesthetic. They considered moving into an airy, open loft until they realized they were too fond of their neighborhood to relocate. As a result, GPSA and our longtime friend and collaborator, decorator David Netto, were hired to completely reinvent their existing uptown space with a contemporary layout and hint of downtown edge.

Focusing on how our clients wanted to live, we reconfigured the floor plan with a modern sensibility to allow for a better flow from room to room. Strategically removing and opening up walls created visual connections and a sense of expansiveness that the original layout was missing, particularly between the entry gallery and living room, and between the library and expanded kitchen. David Netto’s dynamic sense of color and eclectic mix of antiques and modern furnishings throughout the apartment reflect our clients’ style savvy and brings a truly fresh perspective into the space.

In the living room, elegant mahogany doors and a custom Regency-style mantle keep the sense of old world grandeur from the apartment’s 1920s origins, while creating a compelling contrast between the contemporary furnishings and the client’s eclectic art and photography collection.

By reconfiguring and eliminating one of the apartment’s modest bedrooms, we were able to create a generous master suite with a large dressing room and elegant, marble-clad master bath.
